What is French Single Malt Whiskey?

Note on the Advantages of Using Charentais-Type Stills for Whisky Production.

At our distillery, we proudly use Charentais-type copper stills, traditionally employed in the production of Cognac, for the double distillation of our single malt whiskies. Compared to the classic pot stills used in Scotland, Charentais stills offer several significant advantages:

  1. Superior Aromatic Concentration

Charentais stills allow for a slower, gentler distillation, providing better control over temperature and reflux. This results in a spirit that is more refined and complex, with a high concentration of esters — aromatic compounds responsible for fruity, floral, and gourmet notes.

  1. Enhanced Copper Contact

Thanks to the still’s wide, open boiler and its specific design, alcohol vapors enjoy prolonged contact with copper, which improves the purity and elegance of the final distillate. Copper plays a key role in eliminating undesirable sulfur compounds and refining the spirit’s character.

  1. A Fuller, Rounder Spirit

The squat and robust shape of the Charentais still leads to a heavier, oilier spirit with a rounder mouthfeel. This style of distillation is ideal for developing complexity during cask aging and gives our whiskies their signature richness and depth.

  1. Optimized for Double Distillation

Just like in Scotland, we follow a double distillation process. However, the unique characteristics of our stills allow us to produce a spirit with greater finesse and personality. The result is a whisky that combines the strength and structure of a Scotch with a distinctively French aromatic identity.

Using Charentais-type stills enables us to blend French craftsmanship with the traditions of whisky making, resulting in products that are authentic, expressive, and truly unique.

These specifications ensure the authenticity and uniqueness of each bottle while allowing distillers the freedom to innovate.

Suitability  of  French Single Malt Blended with Indian Natural Grain Spirit (NGS)

Blending French Single Malt whiskey with Indian Natural Grain Spirit (NGS) offers a unique opportunity to craft a hybrid whiskey that balances tradition with local preferences. This approach combines the rich flavors of American Single Malt with the neutral base of NGS, creating a versatile product tailored for the Indian market.

Key Benefits:

  1. Cost-Effectiveness:

Indian NGS is an economical spirit, making it a suitable base for blending. When paired with French Single Malt, it can produce a high-quality yet affordable product for Indian consumers.

  1. Flavor Enhancement:

French Single Malt brings depth, complexity, and character to the blend, while NGS, being neutral, ensures that these flavors remain prominent without interference.

  1. Customization for Local Palate:

Indian consumers often prefer lighter, smoother whiskies. Diluting French  Single Malt with NGS allows for adjustments to flavor intensity and alcohol content, making the final product more appealing to the market.

  1. Regulatory Compliance:

The use of NGS aligns with Indian regulations for blended whiskies, ensuring the product is market-ready.

  1. Production Scalability:

Blending with NGS enables efficient scaling, ensuring consistent quality across large production batches.

By blending French Single Malt with Indian NGS, distillers can create a premium yet accessible whiskey tailored for India’s diverse market, offering an innovative product that bridges international tradition with local innovation.

Here’s a rough scale to give you context:

  • Unpeated: 0–1 ppm
  • Slightly peated: 1–5 ppm
  • Moderately peated: 5–15 ppm
